Lazaridis, creator of the BlackBerry, Wants to Build a Quantum Computer in Waterloo | MIT Technology Review




Raymond Laflamme can’t yet sell you a quantum computer. But he’ll sell you a $13,000 logic board for measuring entangled photons.
It’s a start.
Laflamme is head of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo, a research center that’s part of a quixotic, grandiose effort by Mike ­Lazaridis, cofounder of the smartphone maker BlackBerry, to invent a quantum computer and turn this city 70 miles from Toronto into a “Quantum Valley.”

Tesla Motors is a U.S.-based manufacturer of upscale high-performance electric cars. As it notes at its Web site: “The Tesla Roadster hit the streets in early 2008 as a car with no equal. Four years later, over 2,300 Roadsters drive emissions-free in more than 37 countries. Model S and Model X are the next step in the ‘Secret Plan’ to accelerate the world’s transition to electric mobility. Model S is now in production! It’s more than electric, it’s Tesla.” The Model S sells for $62,000 and up.
Now, despite the small amount of cars that Tesla sells, it is embroiled in a battle with car dealers about the right to sell Tesla cars.

Apple wins ‘Brand of the Year’ for computers, smartphones and tablets

Apple may be losing smartphone and tablet marketshare, but it’s still the top brand in those categories. This, according to data from a recent US-based study on consumer brand perception by Marketing research firm Harris Interactive.
The firm polled some 38,000 Americans regarding their perceptions of their favorite brands, and Apple came out on top in 3 categories. As a result, Harris named the company the ‘brand of the year’ for smartphones, tablets and computers…
